Provision & livelihood

Provision (rizq) includes money, but also knowledge, health, time and peace of mind. These duas ask for what is lawful and blessed, and for freedom from needing anyone but Allah.

Allahummak-fini bi halalika 'an haramik, wa aghnini bi fadlika 'amman siwak

O Allah, let what You have made lawful be enough for me so that I need nothing unlawful, and by Your generosity make me free of need for anyone but You.

    Source: Jami' at-Tirmidhi

'Ali ibn Abi Talib taught this to a man burdened by debt, saying the Prophet ﷺ had taught it to him.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbala

O Allah, I ask You for knowledge that benefits, provision that is good and pure, and deeds that are accepted.

    Source: Sunan Ibn Majah

Umm Salamah reported that the Prophet ﷺ said this after the salam of the dawn prayer.

    Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazan, wal-'ajzi wal-kasal, wal-bukhli wal-jubn, wa dala'id-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijal

O Allah, I seek Your protection from worry and grief, from helplessness and laziness, from stinginess and cowardice, from the crushing weight of debt, and from being overpowered by others.

    Source: Sahih al-Bukhari

Anas often heard the Prophet ﷺ say this. Sunan Abi Dawud has a longer form, repeating “wa a'udhu bika” before each pair, which the Prophet ﷺ taught a man troubled by worry and debt to say morning and evening.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-faqri wal-qillati wadh-dhillah, wa a'udhu bika min an azlima aw uzlam

O Allah, I seek Your protection from poverty, from want, and from humiliation, and I seek Your protection from wronging anyone or being wronged.

  5. The dua of Musa

Rabbi inni lima anzalta ilayya min khayrin faqir

My Lord! I am needy of whatever good Thou sendest down for me.

    Source: Quran 28:24 (tr. Pickthall)

Musa (Moses) said this alone, a stranger in Madyan, after helping two women water their flock. Shortly afterwards he was given shelter, work and a family.

Wa man yattaqillaha yaj'al lahu makhraja. Wa yarzuqhu min haythu la yahtasib. Wa man yatawakkal 'alallahi fa huwa hasbuh. Innallaha balighu amrih. Qad ja'alallahu li kulli shay'in qadra.

And whosoever keepeth his duty to Allah, Allah will appoint a way out for him. And will provide for him from (a quarter) whence he hath no expectation. And whosoever putteth his trust in Allah, He will suffice him. Lo! Allah bringeth His command to pass. Allah hath set a measure for all things.

    Source: Quran 65:2–3 (tr. Pickthall)

These verses are a promise rather than a dua, and many people recite them when seeking provision and a way out of difficulty.

    Innallaha huwar-razzaqu dhul-quwwatil-matin

Lo! Allah! He it is that giveth livelihood, the Lord of unbreakable might.

    Source: Quran 51:58 (tr. Pickthall)

    Qulillahumma malikal-mulki tu'til-mulka man tasha'u wa tanzi'ul-mulka mimman tasha', wa tu'izzu man tasha'u wa tudhillu man tasha', biyadikal-khayr, innaka 'ala kulli shay'in qadir. Tulijul-layla fin-nahari wa tulijun-nahara fil-layl, wa tukhrijul-hayya minal-mayyiti wa tukhrijul-mayyita minal-hayy, wa tarzuqu man tasha'u bighayri hisab.

Say: O Allah! Owner of Sovereignty! Thou givest sovereignty unto whom Thou wilt, and Thou withdrawest sovereignty from whom Thou wilt. Thou exaltest whom Thou wilt, and Thou abasest whom Thou wilt. In Thy hand is the good. Lo! Thou art Able to do all things. Thou causest the night to pass into the day, and Thou causest the day to pass into the night. And Thou bringest forth the living from the dead, and Thou bringest forth the dead from the living. And Thou givest sustenance to whom Thou choosest, without stint.
