Duas & adhkar

After every prayer

These words were said by the Prophet ﷺ, or taught by him, for the moments right after the salam of an obligatory prayer. They take only a few minutes and keep the heart in the prayer a little longer.

    Allahu akbar

    Allah is greater than everything.

    Source: Sahih al-Bukhari

Ibn Abbas said he could tell the Prophet's prayer had ended from the takbir that followed it. The narration gives no number; saying it three times is a common practice in several communities.

    Astaghfirullah

I ask Allah to forgive me.

    Source: Sahih MuslimRecite 3×

When he finished his prayer, the Prophet ﷺ asked for forgiveness three times before anything else.

  3. You are Peace

    Allahumma anta as-salam wa minka as-salam, tabarakta dhal-jalali wal-ikram

O Allah, You are Peace and from You comes all peace. Blessed are You, Possessor of majesty and honour.

    Source: Sahih Muslim

Said straight after the three requests for forgiveness. Some narrations read “ya dhal-jalali wal-ikram” (O Possessor of majesty and honour).

  4. Glorifying Allah

    Subhan-Allah

Glory be to Allah, far above every flaw.

    Source: Sahih MuslimRecite 33×
  5. Praising Allah

    Alhamdu lillah

All praise and thanks belong to Allah.

    Source: Sahih MuslimRecite 33×
  6. Magnifying Allah

    Allahu akbar

    Allah is greater than everything.

    Source: Sahih MuslimRecite 33×

Another narration in Sahih Muslim gives 34 takbirs, and the tasbih of Fatimah as practised in Shi'a communities begins with 34 takbirs, then 33 tahmid, then 33 tasbih. The order and counts differ between narrations; all are good.

There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. To Him belongs all sovereignty and all praise, and He has power over everything.

Source: Sahih Muslim · Sahih al-Bukhari

Said once after the 33-33-33 to make a hundred (Sahih Muslim). The Prophet ﷺ also said it after every obligatory prayer (Sahih al-Bukhari), and both collections praise saying it a hundred times in a day.

Allahumma a'inni 'ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni 'ibadatik

O Allah, help me to remember You, to thank You, and to worship You well.

Source: Sunan Abi Dawud · Sunan an-Nasa'i

The Prophet ﷺ told Mu'adh ibn Jabal, out of love for him, never to leave this at the end of any prayer.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-bukhl, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubn, wa a'udhu bika an uradda ila ardhalil-'umur, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatid-dunya, wa a'udhu bika min 'adhabil-qabr

O Allah, I seek Your protection from stinginess and from cowardice. I seek Your protection from being returned to the most helpless stage of old age, from the trials of this world, and from the punishment of the grave.

    Source: Sahih al-Bukhari · Sunan an-Nasa'i

Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas taught these words to his children and said the Prophet ﷺ sought refuge with them after the prayer.

    Allahumma ajirni minan-nar

O Allah, protect me from the Fire.

Source: Sunan Abi DawudRecite 7×, after Maghrib and Fajr

The Prophet ﷺ told Muslim ibn al-Harith to say this seven times after the sunset and dawn prayers. Some hadith scholars consider the chain of this narration weak.

  11. Surah al-Ikhlas

Qul huwallahu ahad. Allahus-samad. Lam yalid wa lam yulad. Wa lam yakun lahu kufuwan ahad.

Say: He is Allah, the One! Allah, the eternally Besought of all! He begetteth not nor was begotten. And there is none comparable unto Him.

    Source: Quran 112:1–4 (tr. Pickthall)

Sunan Abi Dawud reports the Prophet ﷺ telling 'Uqbah ibn 'Amir to recite the mu'awwidhat (the surahs of seeking refuge) after every prayer. Reciting al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq and an-Nas three times each morning and evening is reported in Sunan Abi Dawud and Jami' at-Tirmidhi.

  12. Surah al-Falaq

Qul a'udhu bi rabbil-falaq. Min sharri ma khalaq. Wa min sharri ghasiqin idha waqab. Wa min sharrin-naffathati fil-'uqad. Wa min sharri hasidin idha hasad.

Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the Daybreak From the evil of that which He created; From the evil of the darkness when it is intense, And from the evil of malignant witchcraft, And from the evil of the envier when he envieth.

    Source: Quran 113:1–5 (tr. Pickthall)
  13. Surah an-Nas

Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, The King of mankind, The god of mankind, From the evil of the sneaking whisperer, Who whispereth in the hearts of mankind, Of the jinn and of mankind.
